The long-awaited WordPress 3.0 has been released and is now officially in the beta stage. The announcement came earlier tonight and in a blog post on the WordPress blog, Jane Wells went over some of the new features in WordPress 3.0:

  • There is a new custom menu’s option. However, Wells states that the feature is not completed and will beб═completelyб═changed in Beta 2.
  • In version 3.0, there will be a merger of WordPress and WordPress Multi-User (MU), which allows users of WordPress to host multiple blogs under one domain. You should read the directions before using this feature and should now that it is still buggy and being worked on.
  • There are many user interface changes and improvements, including a new default theme (Twenty Ten) and custom post type functionality improvements.

If you would like to take a look at WordPress 3.0 and try it out for yourself, you can download the update here.

UPDATE: We were able to get a copy of WordPress 3.0 working on a local machine. Here is a picture of the “Twenty Ten” theme:

A few other notes:

  • The color scheme in the Admin area is much lighter, but more elegant.
  • The “Updates” section is now available under Dashboard in the Admin area.
  • You can now convertб═categoriesб═to tags and vice versa
  • Askimet spam protection now comes pre-installed with every WordPress 3.0 install

Overall, the user interface is much lighter, but looks more elegant.

The new Twenty Ten default theme is very elegant and much better than the current default theme.
